Researchers demonstrate helium-free cooling technology designed in response to liquid-helium shortages and rising costs, highlighting how technological substitution could eventually influence helium demand.

Helium markets fluctuate significantly with changes in supply and demand. Ongoing shortages and price volatility drive innovation.  New technology shows that innovation can affect demand as dramatically as an increase in supply. 

Vitaly Markelov, Deputy Chairman of Gazprom's Management Committee, notes that Russian helium production increased by one-third in 2025 as Middle East disruptions drive global demand higher, strengthening Russia's role as a key supplier to China.

Every two weeks or so, we see Blue Star Helium and Helium One publish press releases announcing the delivery of another tube trailer containing around 150 Mcf of helium. This week, we saw that their third trailer load has shipped.

News reports following a sad and deadly Cairo incident repeatedly described a "helium cylinder explosion." Helium is inert and nonflammable: pressurized cylinders can rupture violently, but helium itself doesn't explode.

Hydrogen, by contrast, has a less reassuring history.

Just ask the Germans.
